If you have a question about psychology, hypnotherapy or the mechanics of seeing Kym Harris, chances are, you’ll find the answer to your question here.  But, if you can’t find all you’re looking for, then call Kym on (08) 8267 1397.

What’s the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

Mainly the training.  Whilst there is overlap in client populations and problems treated, there are some important differences in approach.  The psychiatrist, on the one hand, first qualifies in medical school as a medical practitioner and then pursues a specialisation in the areas of organic mental illness and psychopathology.  The psychologist, on the other hand, has training based in human development, perception, behaviour, learning theory and psychometric assessment.  In Australia, psychologists do not prescribe drugs as part of treatment, instead relying on behavioural and cognitive approaches to problem solving.

Are there different types of psychologists?

Psychology is important in all areas of human endeavour and in everything we aspire to.

Some psychologists choose to specialise in particular areas of practice.  These might be neuroscience, health care, the law, clinical applications, educational support, organisations, research and teaching.

How does a person get to see a psychologist?

You can just phone Kym’s office and make an appointment.

It could be that another professional (likely a medical practitioner) might suggest you see Kym and even formally refer you for a visit.

Generally though, a referral  is not required, except in certain circumstances (see below for more information).

How long is a session?

Usually, a session with Kym will last around 50 minutes to an hour, but will vary according to your needs.

How much does it cost?

Kym’s fee is $250 for a standard consultation. The Australian Psychological Society recommends a fee of $300 per 46 – 60 minute session.

Are your fees eligible for any rebate?

Yes, if you have private health insurance (extras). You will need to confirm this with your health fund.

Rebates vary from one health fund to another.

Alternatively, it could be that a third party will meet the expenses of your treatment (for example: under an employee assistance program – perhaps your employer wants to help you quit smoking; you are on a Return to Work program of rehabilitation, or you have lodged a legal claim for compensation).

If your doctor has suggested that you need Kym’s services due to a clinical mental health issue, then you will be referred and provided with a written care plan to pass on to him.  In this case, a rebate of $84.80 can be claimed from Medicare.  If you use Kym’s services under Medicare, you will be responsible for the gap payment, as the law does not permit you to claim from both Medicare and a private health fund, for the same consultation.

Generally, this practice does not bulk bill.  Kym will consider bulk billing under exceptional circumstances.

What is hypnosis like?

It is usually very relaxing – like being absorbed in a good book, a movie or even an activity.  It’s not like being asleep, or under an anaesthetic – not at all.

How does hypnosis work?

To understand this, one has to have an understanding of consciousness. Hypnosis enables the mind to focus its power and permits suggestions to take root at the level of the unconscious mind.

Can I be hypnotised?

The question is more Can I enter a hypnotic state?  Hypnosis is not something that someone does to you. In the right hands and under the right circumstances, virtually any of us can go into hypnosis.
